History
Crossnore Weavers was founded in 1913 by Dr. Mary Martin Sloop. Sharing space with Crosnore’s Fine Arts Gallery, the Weaving Room is a living museum, highlighting decades of history. Exhibits include a timeline, photographs and history, and weaving samples. Special displays celebrate “Women of the Weaving Room” and the Weaving Room’s central figures, Mrs. Newbern Johnson and Ossie Phillips.
Heritage Arts Program
The mission of the Heritage Arts Program is to promote connection and awareness through community engagement, while nurturing the strong historical and educational connection of Crossnore to the community. The Heritage Arts Program offers a series of arts focused workshops to the public to preserve Appalachian Mountain Weaving and introduce students to new art techniques.
Our traditional weaving classes are held three times a year. The five-day course is $500 and includes all materials you will need to take the class. At the end of the session you will have handwoven placemats and a table runner for your personal collection, all woven by you!
