Brett A. Loftis, JD

Chief Executive Officer

Brett Loftis graduated from Furman University with degrees in Sociology and Political Science and in 2001 from Wake Forest University School of Law. After spending numerous years working in ministry and child advocacy, including as the Executive Director of the Council for Children’s Rights in Charlotte, NC, Brett came to Crossnore in 2013 as Chief Executive Officer. In this role, Brett leads all initiatives of the organization, including programs, advancement, facilities, finances, advocacy, and organizational growth. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching youth soccer and basketball. Brett is married to Sally, and the couple has three sons.


Caroline Hart

Deputy Director & Chief Advancement Officer

Caroline Hart graduated from Peace College (now William Peace University) in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. After spending 17 years in higher education fundraising and communications, most recently serving as Vice President of Advancement at Lees-McRae College, Caroline joined the Crossnore School & Children’s Home team in November 2014 as Chief Advancement Officer and became Deputy Director in October 2019. In this role, she leads regional strategies, business growth, communications, and fund development. In her spare time, she loves being a soccer mom, shopping, and spending one-on-one time with her husband. Caroline is married to the Reverend Jim Hart and the couple has five very active children.

Tanya Blackford

Executive Director, Western Region

Tanya Blackford has Master’s degrees in both Public Administration and Social Work from the University of South Carolina. Prior to coming to Crossnore, Tanya served as the Executive Director of Safelight in Hendersonville, NC. In 2018, Tanya joined the Crossnore family as Regional Director of the Hendersonville office and became Executive Director of the Western Region in October 2019. In this role, Tanya is responsible for building relationships, business development, and increasing partnership opportunities within the Western Region. In her spare time, she loves to travel, spending time with her family, and exercising. Tanya is married to Christopher Grose and the couple has two daughters.


Kenny Cook

Chief Facilities Officer

Kenny Cook has a BA in Business Administration and a Master’s of Education from Milligan College in Tennessee. After spending a number of years as a high school teacher and coach at Mitchell High School in Spruce Pine, Kenny came to Crossnore in 2005 where he has served as a Residential Counselor and Residential Director. In his current role as Chief Facilities Officer, Kenny leads construction, maintenance, and housekeeping teams across Crossnore’s campuses. In his spare time, he loves to watch Carolina basketball. Kenny is married to Tava and the couple has three children and three grandchildren.


Teresa Huffman

Chief Financial Officer

Teresa Huffman graduated from Western Carolina University in 1981 with a B.S. in Business Administration and from Appalachian State University in 1993 with a Master of Business Administration. After several years as an instructor at Mayland Community College and 18 years at Spruce Pine Community Hospital as the Controller, Teresa joined Crossnore School & Children’s Home in 2003 as Chief Financial Officer. In this role, she leads all financial aspects of the organization, including financial planning, management of financial risks, record-keeping, and financial reporting. In her spare time, she loves arts and crafts and enjoys travel. Teresa is married to Mike and the couple has one adult son.

Sarah Norris, Ed.D.

Chief Program Officer

Sarah Norris holds a B.S. in Psychology from Gardner-Webb University, a Master of Education in Counseling and Development from Winthrop University, an MBA from East Carolina University, and an Ed.D.  in Organizational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University. Sarah has worked in child welfare for more than 15 years, holding positions with the NC Department of Health & Human Services, as well as at the county level in social services. Sarah joined Crossnore School & Children’s Home in 2018 as the Child Welfare Division Director and became Chief Program Officer in 2020, where she oversees all child welfare programs. In her spare time, Sarah loves to run, travel, read, and spend time with her family. She is married to Steve and the couple has two daughters.


Meribeth Robinson

Executive Director, Triad Region

Meribeth Robinson graduated from Nova Southeastern with a Master of Science degree in Child and Youth Care Administration. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a founding member of the National Association for Multiple Family Group Therapy. Meribeth worked in private practice for more than a decade providing therapeutic services to families, healthcare agencies, psychiatric practices, and schools. She joined Crossnore School & Children’s Home in 2015 as Chief Clinical Officer and became the Executive Director of the Triad Region in October 2019. In this role, Meribeth is responsible for building relationships, business development and increasing partnership opportunities within the Triad Region. In her spare time, she is a runner, lifts weights, is a bit of a wine snob, and loves spending time at Lake Norman. Meribeth is married to Ann Gauthreaux and the couple has one adult daughter.

Johannes Steffin

Clinical Director

Johannes Steffin has a BS in Business Administration from IHK Berlin and a BS in Human and Family Services from Southwestern Christian University. He holds a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counseling from Southern Nazarene University and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and nationally AAMFT-approved Supervisor. Johannes worked in hospitals and private practice for many years before joining Crossnore School & Children’s Home in 2016 as a Lead Therapist. In his current role as Clinical Director, Johannes leads the clinical services teams across Crossnore’s locations, including outpatient therapy, medical services, school-based therapies, and day treatment. In his spare time, Johannes enjoys playing soccer and spending time with his family. Johannes is married to Karen and the couple has three daughters.


Jenny Taylor

Chief People Officer

Jenny Taylor graduated from Weber State University with a B.S. in Health Care Administration, from Western Carolina University with an M.A. in Human Resources and holds a graduate certificate in Organizational Leadership from Liberty University. Jenny joined Crossnore School & Children’s Home in 2004, beginning as the Director of Human Resources and is now Chief People Officer. In this role, Jenny leads the hiring, evaluation, and leadership development functions for the organization. In her spare time, Jenny enjoys the creative aspects of photography, and exploring vintage, antique, and estate sales, also known as “pickin’.” Jenny is married to Brian and the couple has two adult daughters.

Racism is Trauma

Crossnore School & Children’s Home exists to be a sanctuary for children and their families and racism destroys sanctuary. Racism is trauma and is part of systemic community trauma that has long term negative impacts on people and communities of color. Crossnore believes that black lives matter, and we are committed to building an anti-racist organization and supporting the development of racial equity in our communities.
