Carol Schaffer

Since I was a child I have loved to make things. I painted, puttered with clay, loved origami. However, the last time I took art classes was many years ago in high school. Pursuing  a career in dentistry was a continuation of that joy in using my hands and vision to create change. I am still a practicing dentist and as a new hobby I started about 12 years ago making functional collages out of found metal items which I combined with  photography and painting. Now I have begun doing some fluid work with acrylics and am experimenting with colors and movement.

Artist’s Statement:

I am really enjoying doing abstract work and and finding ways to combine unlikely colors together to form pleasing shapes and patterns.  Working with fluid paint is always surprising due to the way the different colors and paint weights move through each other.  All the pieces are sealed with acrylic, varnish or resin.

Racism is Trauma

Crossnore School & Children’s Home exists to be a sanctuary for children and their families and racism destroys sanctuary. Racism is trauma and is part of systemic community trauma that has long term negative impacts on people and communities of color. Crossnore believes that black lives matter, and we are committed to building an anti-racist organization and supporting the development of racial equity in our communities.
